Tooth Brushing for Young Children

18 Months or Under

  • Start brushing when the first teeth are comming out
  • Twice a day with a child sized soft toothbrush
  • No toothpaste needed

 

Brushing Tips

  • Use small circular motions
  • Brush along the gum lines
  • Brush all food-contacting / -chewing surfaces (top, bottom, front and back) of teeth

18 Months and Over

  • Brush twice a day with a pea sized amount of fluoride toothpaste for kids
  • Spit out and no swallowing of the toothpaste
  • No rinsing after brushing
  • Help children to brush until 8 years of age
  • Parent is the most important role model for the child
